Follow Up to “Parked In the Bike Lane”

Lancine Bentley, with City of Denton/Keep Denton Beautiful, provided clarification on the earlier “Parked In the Bike Lane” post.

Just to clarify……the Code Enforcement Officer is not actually parked in the bike lane but is taking pictures of the vegetation growing into the bike lane.  He was following up on a complaint received by a citizen, more than likely a concerned cyclist.  So…we are trying to do our part to keep bike lanes accessible and safe for the cycling public.

And on that positive note, I’ll say that yesterday eve I saw five other cyclists in the Hinkle bike lanes during my daily ride home from UNT Discovery Park.  Over the last few years of riding this route daily, I think more and more folks are using it.  Last week I met a gentleman in a wheelchair who uses the bike lane to get to Northlakes Park because Hinkle lacks a sidewalk.

Bicycle Commuting Up 43% Since 2000

The 2008 Census Bureau results of the American Community Study, released today, show a 43% increase in use of bicycles as a primary means of getting to work.   2007-2008 saw a 14% increase.

I’m proud to be part of the 43% who switched.

Bike Race/Beer/Food This Saturday

On September 26, bicycles will rule downtown Denton, as race promoter Christian Williams and the Denton Sports Commission hold the Sam Bass Bicycle Challenge.  My dog and I have previously watched the race from the courthouse lawn, and I loved it, but the event was never well-publicized.  Until now.  It’s a luxury to have a race pass through the historic downtown, and it’s completely free to the public.  If you want to drink beer, eat food, and watch the race fly by, check out the Industrial St Beer Garden info below.

Although the course doesn’t wind around the courthouse this year, it makes a loop just east of the square.

Additionally, the Industrial St Guild (Dan’s Silverleaf, Seniors in Motion, Roosters, Fuzzy’s) are hosting a Beer Garden patio for race spectators on the parking spots along Industrial.  They’ll have food, beer, music, and it’ll be a nice place to watch the racers go by.  Querencia Community Bike Shop is providing free bike-valet service.

Bullseye Bike Shop Owner Foils Robbery Attempt

Friday afternoon, Bullseye bike shop owner Aaron accosted a thief and held him until police arrived.  The thief stole a black and orange bicycle chain, which makes me wonder if there’s a Halloween bike party in that we don’t know about.

Candace Carlisle of the Denton Record Chronicle reports:

The owner of a Denton bicycle shop was attacked after confronting a fleeing shoplifter Friday afternoon, but fought back and helped apprehend the suspect, according to a police report.

The 26-year-old owner told police he saw a young man put an orange and black colored bike chain in his pocket and walk out of his shop without paying for it, according to the report.

When the owner followed the man to ask for his bike chain back, the man threw down his bike and told him he wasn’t giving it back.

The 17-year-old punched the owner in the cheek and forehead, according to the report.

The bleeding owner then grabbed the suspect in a headlock and wrestled him to the ground. The suspect’s eye was cut by the bike chain in the tussle.

Police officers arrested the teenager for robbery and criminal mischief.

As police drove him to the city jail, the suspect kicked out two patrol car windows, bending the window frames in the process.

The teenager was taken to the jail’s intoxication tank until he calmed down, the report stated.

1975 – “Denton is a city of bikes”

Do bicycles outsell cars in Denton?  A Denton bicycle salesman from 1975 declared that, and I wonder if it holds true 34 years later?

In 2009, we have three active commercial shops in Denton (Bullseye, Denton Bicycle, and Bicycle Path) and one community shop (Querencia).  Two weeks ago, both Bullseye and Bicycle Path employees reported strong sales at the beginning of the fall semester, and both shops appeared to have sold out of the most practical commuter-style bikes.

June 15, 1975, John W. Moody wrote a Denton Record Chronicle article about the prominence and growth of cycle commuting in Denton.  Highlights from the article include a statement from a bicycle salesman that bikes were outselling cars two-to-one, a description of the Yellow Jacket Gang, and general discussion of the relative ease of cycle commuting to UNT and TWU.  Photos by Jim Mahoney.

Not long ago, a Denton auto dealer and a bicycle salesman were having an argument. It was a friendly type of argument, one of those discussions where there was more joking than anything else.  But this conversation was on a subject close to each of the men’s hearts – the merits of various cars and bicycles.  “I don’t care what car you like,” said the bike man, “but whatever it is, it’s being outsold by bicycles in Denton two to one.”  Obviously, bicycles are cheaper than autos.  And the gasoline expense are certainly only less than a car, they are nonexistent.

But other than all that, anyone driving down any neighborhood in any part of the city will soon learn that Denton is a city of bikes.  In fact, it has been that way for some time.  Bicycles swarm down Mingo Road and for that matter in the downtown areas.  Bicycle Clubs practically each weekend take long rides and the clubs are gaining members at practically every bend of the road.  Denton Police officers have a strong interest in bicycle safety, and pains have been taken in recent years to hold bicycle clinics.  Bicycles are also changing the face of the downtown area, as bicycle racks have suddenly appeared on the downtown square.  More are scheduled to appear if the first ones are actually put to use.

And the change is not only due to the number of bicycles and growing public notice of the fact.  There are also a complete change in the riders.  Time was in Denton when bicycle riders were youngsters somewhere between junior high age and those just on the verge of applying for a driver’s license.  Not so, any more.  Young adults – and old adults – are seen pedaling down the street at nearly every other intersection.  And those who feel that they’ve reached the age where a bicycle might be a bit dangerous, there’s always a tricycle.  For several senior citizens have banded together for tricycle trips.  But these three-wheelers are not ordinarily tricycles.  They are giant tricycles and it takes more skill than you would believe to operate one.  Bicycle riders are generally lost until they get the feel of the big tricycles.  One group of oldsters take trips around the neighborhood and go shopping together.  They were bright yellow jackets and call themselves the “Yellow Jacket Gang.”  But the bulk of the bicycle riders in Denton are more likely students.  And their reasons are more than fun or economics, although both of these probably play a part.  Students use the bicycles because they are handy.

With parking space at a premium around North Texas State University, a bicycle is perhaps the most convenient method of traveling from one end of the campus to another.  Bicycles racks abound at NTSU and there is no question about these being used.  Some students find a bicycle so much a necessity they transport them back and forth from Dallas and Fort Worth by their cars.  They still have to find a parking place, but after that they take off on their bikes and save a good deal of shoe leather.

Interview With UNT Transportation Director, Joe Richmond

Thanks so much for talking with us. What is your background leading to your position as Transportation Director at UNT?

I initially worked as a shuttle bus driver for UT Austin, before I went to work for Capital Metro in Austin, just as they were born. I worked at Capital Metro for 18 years. I actually had an office on the UT campus while I worked for Capital Metro.

We see more cyclists riding on campus every year. Is cycling ridership increasing at UNT, and do you know if it’s been recently measured?

I don’t have a scientific method for measuring, but the bike racks appear to be at capacity. We have around 2500 bikes parked on campus. We purchased 100 racks and placed them strategic locations on campus.

Cycling was recently decriminalized on campus, and many bike racks have been installed.  What drove these changes?

We had a  bike consultant come in and provide us with a Campus Bicycle Master Plan which was adopted by the UNT  board of Regents in 2006. One of their recommendations was to install racks near entrances to the buildings. This came from a series of  focus groups. I was intimately involved with the study

Is demand still increasing, and do you think more racks will be installed?

Yes!

Dallas just hired a bike coordinator, and Fort Worth and Austin have published ambitious master bicycle plans. For their efforts, all three cities are attracting national attention. Would you like to see comprehensive bike and pedestrian plans in Denton, especially given the advantage of Denton’s smaller city size?

Yes, I think the time is right. Based on the growth and the alternative transportation initiatives, the stars are lining up right for Denton. All we’re missing is infrastructure and policies. The demand, energy, need, and social acceptance are already here.  In my opinion, Denton is perfect for this. I can close my eyes and see corridors with bikes, buses, and pedestrians.   No single occupancy vehicles.

If your department advocates cycling and walking, does that conflict with UNT Parking services which collect income from drivers?

UNT Parking and Transportation work as a TDM model, “Travel Demand Management”, and we want people to come to this university and have a pleasant experience. Fewer cars on campus equal less congestion, pollution, and aggravation.

UNT Transportation services have recently undergone huge increases in bus capacity, routes, handicap access, and bicycle accommodation during the last few years. Did you oversee this transition, and do you consider it a success?

I absolutely consider this a success. The student fee was voted and accepted by the UNT Board of Regents in 2002, and the service was first operated by a private contractor, Noble Coaches. I think the ridership back then was about one thousand per day with the city operating one route for UNT and their LINK system. Then, we agreed to operate 10 buses, purchased by UNT, in conjuction with Denton. The service continued to grow, so we bought used buses from Dallas. We transferred ownership of 15 buses from DART to the City of Denton. We had 27 buses total, and then DCTA received their funding to come into existence from area cities. The city was amiable to transferring the assets from DCTA, so DCTA took over the service. This is directly patterned after the UT/Capital Metro relationship.

How many buses does UNT currently use?

UNT owns 12 buses, DCTA provides the rest for a total of 27.
UNT bus service accounts for about 85% of DCTA’s total ridership.

The City of Denton has shown renewed interest in multi-modal transit, especially with the DCTA A-train coming soon. Do you anticipate many students will commute to UNT via the train?

Yes, 200 students ride the Commuter Express every day from Lewisville and Dallas, and we expect this number to continue to increase.

Are there any related transit plans to ease passage between the train station and the UNT campus?

Absolutely. DCTA is looking to provide efficient links to the universities from the rail stations.

In what ways do you anticipate transit services to evolve at UNT in the future?

A totally walk and roll campus

I’d like to see enhanced and improved connections to major off-campus Denton destinations. I think we serve the students quite well, getting them from off campus housing to campus. I’d like to see more cycling and walking. We have a web-based rideshare program, customized to the UNT community. We also have a late-night E-ride service from 9PM-2AM on-campus only.

This fall, we’re starting a car-sharing program so students/employees can rent cars by the hours. It’s becoming very popular on dense urban environments and campuses. We’ll have 2 Priuses, 1 Camry, and a Ford Escape. The hourly rates will start as low as $8/hour. Reservations can be made online, and users receive an access card so they’ll never have to go to a counter or deal with a person.

The one bike lane on campus runs along Avenue C. It has a huge pothole alongside the music building, and cars park in it constantly. Can this bike lane be improved?

We don’t consider it an official bike lane.

A few years ago, at a President Pohl sack lunch, UNT administrative staff expressed plans to develop separated pedestrian and cycling paths. Does UNT intend to further expand bicycle routes or implement separated cycling/walking paths?

I don’t think we’re going to implement separated paths, this is working pretty well. We periodically check with Risk Management to see if there are any pedestrian/cyclist accidents, and there are no reported injury accidents to date.

Do you ever walk or cycle on campus?

I prefer walking; I can get across campus in 10 minutes and see users of campus transportation, see full bike racks, hear the music, and I feel like part of the campus community. You get the campus experience. Nothing will give you the campus experience like taking a 10 minute walk through UNT. You’ll see loneliest people in town in their cars.

What To Do After A Car Hits You

Urban Velo published a succinct post today with 6 steps that you should take after being hit by a car.

1. If you are in pain, stay put. Don’t try to move. You could end up injuring yourself even more.
2. Call 9-1-1 or tell someone else to do it for you
3. Make sure to get the driver’s name, license plate, insurance info and contact info
4. Get a police report
5. Contact a lawyer
6. Contact your city councilperson and tell them your story and that you want safer cycling conditions in the city

After Nick Magruder was recently hit-and-run on Bonnie Brae on May 13th, he went through most of those steps.  I say most because to my knowledge he didn’t contact a council person and let them know what happened, but I definitely did.  In querying the Denton police department to obtain cyclist accident statistics, we learned that they were not keeping track of cyclist accidents, but they are now, since we asked.

On the topic of #3, I have previously failed to memorize license plates during traffic incidents, and now I regularly scan plates with my eyes just as practice.  It definitely hasn’t come naturally to me during the few unfortunate incidents I’ve had, like when a van on Hwy 77 stopped and the passenger threatened to get a gun and shoot me.  In situations like that, with adrenaline pumping, I simply never thought to memorize the license plate.  As a result, the (UNT) policeman was not inclined do anything.

Lesson learned: practice memorizing license plates, so you can do it when it counts.
